10 Essential Du'as Every Muslim Should Memorize

Du'a is the most personal act of worship in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ called it "the essence of worship" (Tirmidhi). And yet many adult Muslims feel stuck — making the same two or three du'as on repeat because they never built a vocabulary.

This is your starter kit. Ten short, authentic du'as that, between them, cover almost every moment of an ordinary day. None of them takes more than ten seconds to memorize.

1. Waking up

Alhamdu lillahi alladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhi-n-nushur.

"All praise is for Allah, who gave us life after taking it from us, and to Him is the resurrection." (Bukhari)

Say it before your feet hit the floor. It reframes the day — every morning is, technically, a small resurrection.

2. Leaving the house

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'ala-llah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

"In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever says this is told: you are guided, you are sufficed, you are protected, and the devils stay back.

3. Entering the bathroom

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-khubthi wal-khaba'ith.

>

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female evil spirits." (Bukhari, Muslim)

A tiny sunnah most people forget. Say it silently before you step in.

4. After eating

Alhamdu lillahi alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

>

"Praise be to Allah, who fed me this and provided it without any effort or strength on my part." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says this after eating has their past sins forgiven.

5. Before sleeping

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.

>

"In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live." (Bukhari)

Pair it with reciting Al-Fatiha, the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (the Ayat al-Kursi and the last two verses), Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas. This was the Prophet's ﷺ nightly routine.

6. When anxious

La ilaha illa Anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min adh-dhalimin.

>

"There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I was among the wrongdoers." (Anbiya' 21:87)

The du'a of Yunus (AS) from inside the whale. The Prophet ﷺ said: "No Muslim ever supplicates with this du'a in any situation, except that Allah answers him." (Tirmidhi)

Memorize this one if you memorize nothing else.

7. When you wake at night

La ilaha illa Allahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer. Alhamdu lillah, wa subhana-llah, wa la ilaha illa-llah, wa-llahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. Allahumma-ghfirli.

"There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belong dominion and praise, and He is over all things capable. Praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is greatest, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah. O Allah, forgive me."

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever wakes at night and says this, then asks Allah for anything, will be answered. (Bukhari).

Long, but worth memorizing slowly over a month.

8. Before studying or working

Rabbi shrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul 'uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli.

>

"My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue so they may understand me." (Ta-Ha 20:25-28)

The du'a of Musa (AS) before he addressed Pharaoh. Use it before any meeting, presentation, exam, or hard conversation.

9. When you make a mistake

Astaghfirullah al-'Adheem alladhi la ilaha illa Huwa, al-Hayy al-Qayyum, wa atubu ilayh.

"I seek the forgiveness of Allah, the Magnificent, besides Whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, and I repent to Him." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says this is forgiven, even if he has fled from battle.

10. The most comprehensive du'a

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhab an-nar.

>

"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." (Al-Baqarah 2:201)

Anas (RA) said this was the most frequent du'a the Prophet ﷺ made. It asks for everything — wealth, health, family, faith, jannah — in one perfectly balanced sentence.

How to actually memorize these

Pick one du'a a week. For seven days, say it every time the relevant moment comes up. Don't move to the next one until it's automatic.

What changes

Two months in, you'll notice that you're talking to Allah constantly throughout the day in short, specific moments — not just in big formal du'as after prayers. That's the point.

The Prophet ﷺ remembered Allah in every state — entering, leaving, eating, sleeping, waking. These du'as let you do the same, in his exact words. There's no higher form of imitation in Islam.
